If you love Nier: Automata, then Nier Replicant should be shooting up your list of most-anticipated games right now. Technically called “Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139,” Square Enix announced this updated version of the original game earlier this year, but revealed the April 23, 2021 release date today as part of the Tokyo Game Show 2020‘s digital festivities.
The history of how this game fits into the Nier series is a little complicated. When the original game released in Japan in 2010, it had two versions: Nier Gestalt and Nier Replicant. The bulk of the games’ content was the same, but the protagonists and some story beats were different.
For the North American release, only Nier Gestalt released here, simply under the title Nier. So this new upgraded version of Nier Replicant is technically the first time the game is releasing in North America – and with updated visuals, it looks even better than it did before. You can see some of the new screenshots below.

For people who played Nier 10 years ago, the differences between versions could be a fun way to make a familiar game feel fresh. And for players who only came on board with Automata, it should be a good opportunity to learn more about the characters and world.
Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 is releasing on current-generation hardware (and PC) on April 23, 2021. Square Enix’s announcement does not mention the upcoming PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.
