A Fold Apart is an award-winning 3D puzzle game from Lightning Rod Games that explores the emotional struggles of a long-distance relationship through a unique new mechanic… folding paper!
In A Fold Apart, you begin the game by choosing the couple you will play. I loved that you can choose a couple that represents who you are and shows just how inclusive this game really is. As you start the game, you see that the couple has decided to make it a long distance relationship due to job opportunities. You will play the game as both people in the couple as you go back and forth through their journey. We will refer to them as Red and Blue for the sake of this review.
The game begins with a tutorial as you take the lead of Blue as they have fallen asleep at their desk while working. The tutorial guides you into the gameplay which involves solving puzzles by folding and flipping pages as well as utilizing items that you are given.
As the game truly begins, you switch between the torn lovers as they both deal with the new circumstances of their relationship and the decisions that got them to this point. Each puzzle will put them against their insecurities and doubts about their relationship as you help them solve it and reassure them.
The puzzles in the game can get a bit intense and very tricky. No worries, if you feel you are stuck the game does provide some hints to help get you out of a rut and help figure it all out. The puzzles utilize the games “folding” and “flipping” mechanics for puzzles and put you through the test in using them.
This game is more than just a puzzle but a tale of love. It has poetically and aesthetically shown the the ups and downs of a long distance relationship as well as the conflict they may face.
For those who are looking for a good puzzle game or just a really good story, we recommend taking A Fold Apart for a spin. It is definitely a journey you would not want to miss.
