Indie games are really coming back with full force and we want to spot light some indies that peaked our interests. These indie games are still in development but the gameplay videos and screenshots have us wanting more.

1. Undermine

UnderMine is an action-adventure roguelike game with some RPG elements. It blends traditional roguelikes like “The Binding of Isaac,” with progression based rogue-lites like “Rogue Legacy.” Mine gold on each run and increase the peasant’s power by finding powerful relics. Rescue NPCs and return them to the hub where they will offer powerful upgrades for future runs. Delve deeper, exploring each new area, discover its many secrets and ultimately defeat its powerful boss.

LEVEL UP’S TAKE

UnderMine’s art style gives us a nostalgic feeling and the detail to the gameplay is apparent throughout some of the teaser videos. The gameplay showcases some amazing detail to the environment as well as the monsters you must defeat.

Dungeon crawling is listed on our resume as a list of skills and Undermine really strives to keep us pleased. With secrets hidden away and gems to find this game is definitely one to watch!

2. Cris Tales

Cris Tales is a gorgeous, indie love letter to classic JRPGs with a new perspective. Peer into the past, act in the present, and watch as your choices dynamically change the future — all on one screen as you play! Beautifully hand-drawn 2D animations bring to life a world where your choices will change both the present and the future across more than 20 hours of gameplay.

LEVEL UP’S TAKE

Cris Tales has a demo out on their website and we got a chance to play this one. As lovers of the JRPG genre, this game really hones in on those elements. The combat style and design really makes this game such an eye catcher that you find yourself lost in the story and the art.

Don’t believe us? Try out the demo today and see for yourself.

3. Röki

Röki is an adventure game inspired by Scandinavian folklore; a dark contemporary fairy tale, underpinned by a deep narrative, satisfying puzzles and daring exploration.

We join Tove on a fantastical journey to save her family. A journey that takes her deep into a hidden and long forgotten world of lost folklore, filled with strange locations and even stranger characters.

LEVEL UP’S TAKE

Polygon Treehouse’s debut game is still in the early stages but it is visually captivating. This game takes a look at folklore and brings life to it by crafting a world and reimagining the story for an audience of today. While full gameplay has yet to be revealed, we already have a good feeling about Röki.

4. Indivisible

The story takes place in a city made of giant lanterns floating in an everlasting night sky. Here the Magic is not atypical, but regarded more as a common everyday thing. Human beings live alongside djinns, and one can either ride a flying carpet or a tramway to reach the next neighborhood. It is told that ages ago, Simurgh, the giant bird goddess, created the city as a present for a prince. She drew the lanterns of the city, its palaces, streets, and gardens directly on the night sky. But no one has seen her for decades as she left for one of her century-long nap.

Indivisible is a completely hand drawn and animated RPG platformer with ultra-rare, real time party fighter mechanics. Immerse yourself in a fantastical world with dozens of playable characters, a rich storytelling experience, gameplay that’s easy to learn but difficult to master, and that trademark razor-sharp quality that Lab Zero Games is known for!

Our story revolves around Ajna, a good-natured tomboy with a rebellious streak. Raised by her father on the outskirts of their rural town, her life is thrown into chaos when her home is attacked and a mysterious power awakens within her.

LEVEL UP’S TAKE

We have to commend Lab Zero Games for really fleshing out their characters and introducing us to this amazing set. Ajna is not your typical damsel in a fighting game but has come to really kick some [censored]. Not only did we fall in love with Ajna’s character but also Ginseng and Honey.

The gameplay is absolutely gorgeous and the combat in the game is animated so well that we are just at the edge of our seats for more. Indivisible is definitely a title to keep an eye on.

5. 30Birds

30Birds is a poetic and humorous adventure game which casually mixes oriental fairy tales with modern mystery. It is set in an enchanting painted world where 2D and 3D complement each others in a unique way.

The story takes place in a city made of giant lanterns floating in an everlasting night sky. Here the Magic is not atypical, but regarded more as a common everyday thing. LEVEL UP’S TAKE

The art style caught our attention and not just at first look but throughout the whole teaser. The movement of the main character across the world had our mouths on the floor as we were shifted from 2D to 3D so seamlessly.

This game is still far out from release but that doesn’t mean we can’t stay on the watch for this title.
