Sparklite is a roguelite brawler-adventure set in a the fun world of Geodia where you play as Ada as you invent guns and gadgets to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Sparklite is an “approachable roguelike”, which borrows randomness from roguelikes like Rogue Legacy and the appeal of classic RPG/adventure games titles like Zelda: A Link to the Past.  Sparklite is out today and available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and the PC.

The game starts you on your airship as you encounter a storm and must abandon your ship and unfortunately… your companion as you enter a new world. With just your hammer and your instincts you traverse this new terrain and are met with different creatures and

obstacles in the way. The game uses the same heart system those who have played Zelda and others like it are familiar it. Once your last heart is depleted, you are rescued by those in the refuge. The refuge is where you can find shops, upgrade them and upgrade your hearts, weapons, maps and other things to help you on your journey.

Starting out the first thing that caught my attention was the movements. The character movements felt so fluid especially with it paying homage to older RPGs. Attacking, power boosts, and just plain walking around didn’t come with any problems we could find.

And just to spice things up, every time your heart is depleted and you are rescued, the world changes. It is referred to as being fractured, meaning each time the world connects differently. You will find new enemies, puzzles, items and other things for each instance. This actually makes your failure, a bit rewarding. Knowing that every time you “fail”, you are met with a new world and therefore a new challenge really takes this game up a notch. I found myself preparing at the refuge… but no idea what I was preparing for. Also, co-op mode was a great tie-in for those who wants to bring a friend along.

The game overall was enjoyable and definitely filled the nostalgia quota for myself. With minor hiccups, the game still held strong and I found myself addicted to going back to the world to see what has shifted.
