Assetto Corsa EVO Free Roam Mode Revealed

Forget staying on the racetrack. Assetto Corsa EVO is taking its driving simulation into the surrounding streets of Germany.

What happens when one of racing’s most recognizable circuits becomes part of a much bigger driving playground?

That’s the idea behind Assetto Corsa EVO’s newly revealed Free Roam mode, which will let players explore roads, villages, and landmarks around Germany’s legendary Nürburgring.

Developer KUNOS Simulazioni and publisher 505 Games unveiled the feature on October 7, offering a closer look at how the racing simulator plans to expand beyond traditional track-based driving.

And no, this isn’t just another circuit with a few extra roads attached.

Free Roam Brings the Eifel Region to Life

The new mode features a 1:1-scale recreation of selected areas of Germany’s Eifel region, home to the Nürburgring and its famous 12.9-mile Nordschleife.

Players will be able to explore real-world roads, villages, and landmarks surrounding the circuit, with KUNOS emphasizing accurate road dimensions, elevation changes, intersections, and terrain.

The initial playable area will include the Nordschleife, nearby villages, and connecting roads. Additional parts of the Eifel region are planned for future expansion.

The goal? Make driving itself the experience, even when there’s no finish line waiting.

Weather, Traffic, and Multiplayer Exploration

Free Roam isn’t limited to cruising around an empty map.

KUNOS confirmed several features designed to make the environment feel more alive:

  • Dynamic weather: Changing conditions while exploring.
  • Day and night cycle: Drive through the region at different times.
  • AI traffic: Traffic patterns that vary based on local conditions.
  • Single-player and multiplayer: Explore alone or drive with friends.
  • Optional challenges: Participate in activities such as Time Attack events.

That combination could give Assetto Corsa EVO a different kind of appeal. Competitive racing remains central to the experience, but Free Roam offers something for players who just want to get behind the wheel and drive.

When Can Players Try Assetto Corsa EVO Free Roam?

The first public hands-on experience is scheduled for Sim Racing Expo in Germany, October 16–18, 2026.

Attendees will be able to try Free Roam at dedicated stations during the event.

KUNOS co-founder Marco Massarutto will also introduce the mode on October 16.

For everyone else, the developer has released a 15-minute video presentation showing off the feature.

More Than Just Racing?

Assetto Corsa EVO is already available in Early Access on PC, but Free Roam could become one of its most interesting additions.

There’s something appealing about a racing simulator that doesn’t always demand a race. Sometimes you want to push for the fastest lap. Other times, you just want to see where the road goes.

Whether KUNOS can deliver the same attention to detail across an open environment remains to be seen.

But turning the Nürburgring’s surrounding region into a drivable world? That’s certainly one way to expand the experience.
