Neversong, formerly known as “Once Upon A Coma”, puts you in the role of Peet as he has woken up from coma to find his girlfriend, Wren, is missing.  You will be accompanied by your pet bird named Bird, trusty bat and the occasional friend as you solve the mystery of Wren, what happened to the grown ups, and about your coma.

The game starts with Peet in a creepy building as he solves his way out of by interacting with doors or jumping to trigger the lifts. Throughout the halls we see knife-wielding people watching us through the window. As we finally make a break for it, it all appears to have been a dream. You arise in Wren’s house and still no sign of Wren. There is only one thing to do, head outside. There you will find your friends who mention that their parents have been missing since they went out to find Wren. As you progress, you do some digging and unlock your trusty bat that you can use to hand out some beatings and eventually gloves for some high jumps and swinging.

The game leads you through different dark and creepy areas such as the sewers, graveyard or even an asylum. In each place, you get closer to solving the mystery as you solve puzzles alongside your quirky friends (and boy do some of them have some personality), fight bosses and unlock new songs.

The enemies start out as bugs which just take a few swats to knock down and then progress to knife wielding adults… which I was not prepared for. You won’t find much variety to the enemies other than the bosses however the game makes sure that each boss makes it worth your while.

As far as the gameplay, there isn’t much to the mechanics, you will need to jump, hit or interact with things. Overall, it’s pretty simple and streamlined which gives room to build out more of the story. The game was made for anyone to enjoy and truly get sucked into the narrative. I found a lot of nodes to the Zelda franchise from Bird who is very fairy-like, your sounds while swinging your sword, new songs to learn and even some of the game puzzles.

The game’s narrative, graphics and sound can really bring you in. The game touches on some dark themes and can give you a very creepy feeling and yes we jumped a few times while playing.

For those looking for a short game to get into, we highly recommend Neversong. However, we do not recommend it in the dark.
