Before I even began the game the title screen gave me so much nostalgia that I kept it there just for a bit. The title screen definitely brought back those feelings of playing earlier Zelda titles. The art style is beautifully done and such a throw back to the Zelda titles.

You begin your story as Cadence from the original Brace Yourself Games’ title, Crypt of the Necrodancer, as she goes through the dungeon they are teaching you the gameplay and the controls of the game. It felt like a no-brainer. After the tutorial, you decide which of the two heroes you want to wake up first; Link or Zelda. I chose Link and began the rest of the story as him.

Now here is where my rude awakening came. I traveled through their world and encountered multiple monsters but the beat became back of my mind resulting in getting my behind handed to me. I thought this would be easy for me but concentrating on the beat while trying to kick some a#% ended up being more of a challenge for me. After getting a hang of the game and the controls it became a bit easier for a time period.

The music of the game gives odes to the past Zelda titles along with past monsters… you can’t go wrong. For those who lack rhythm (not judging), there is a fixed beat mode which ignores the music beats but makes it where the monsters only move when you do.

Each run of the game is unique as the map is randomly generated which can bring a new spin every time you choose to play. The length of the game is roughly 5 hours depending on your play style (which is a bit short). Speed runners can see that number go down while explorers like myself will be in that range or higher. However, with a new map each time this makes the speed runs even more of a challenge.

The Good

  • • Game graphics are well done and reminiscent of past Zelda titles.
  • • High replay value.

The Bad

  • • Control are a bit wonky.
  • • Length of game is short at roughly 5 hours.

Summary

Cadence of Hyrule is a refreshing game and one of the best Legend of Zelda spin-offs we have ever seen. This game will frustrate you and entertain you at the same time with it’s generated maps and vengeful monsters.
