Who needs a surfboard when you can ride a magical sword across an ocean of sand?
Sword of the Sea, the visually stunning adventure from developer Giant Squid, launches on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S today, October 29, 2026.
Announced during Nintendo’s latest Indie World Showcase, the new release brings the atmospheric adventure to additional consoles following its original August 19, 2025 launch on PlayStation 5 and PC.
And if you’ve ever wanted to combine the peaceful exploration of Journey with the thrill of snowboarding, this might be your next adventure.
Sword of the Sea Arrives on Switch 2 and Xbox
Developed by Giant Squid and published on the new platforms by Fictions, Sword of the Sea invites players into a mysterious world where deserts behave like oceans and ancient ruins hide the secrets of a lost civilization.
Players take on the role of the Wraith, a mysterious figure resurrected within the desolate Necropolis.
Your mission is to restore a long-lost ocean, bringing water and life back to a world consumed by sand.
But instead of traveling on foot, you’ll explore using something much more interesting.
A magical Hoversword.
Surf Across Deserts, Mountains, and Ancient Ruins

The Hoversword combines the movement of a snowboard, skateboard, and surfboard, allowing players to build momentum, launch into the air, and perform tricks while navigating the environment.
You’ll carve through enormous sand dunes, glide across glacial landscapes, and explore forgotten ruins designed around fluid movement.
Players can perform flips, spins, and aerial tricks as they discover new areas.
Basically, somebody looked at a skateboard and said, “What if we made this mystical?”
We’re listening.
Restore a Lost Ocean
Exploration isn’t just about getting from one location to another.
As the Wraith, players work to uncover the secrets of the Necropolis and restore its lost waters.
Desolate landscapes gradually transform into vibrant environments as water returns and marine life begins to flourish.
The experience blends movement, environmental storytelling, and discovery, creating an adventure that emphasizes atmosphere as much as action.
There’s also darkness lurking beneath the waves, so don’t get too comfortable.
From the Creative Talent Behind Journey and ABZÛ
One of the biggest draws of Sword of the Sea is its creative pedigree.
The game comes from Giant Squid, the independent studio behind ABZÛ and The Pathless.
Creative director Matt Nava previously contributed to the distinctive visual worlds of Journey, while composer Austin Wintory brings his musical talents to Sword of the Sea.
Their creative history is reflected in the game’s emphasis on sweeping environments, evocative music, and immersive exploration.
If you enjoy games that tell stories through their worlds rather than overwhelming you with dialogue, this one deserves a look.
Where Can You Play Sword of the Sea?
As of October 29, 2026, Sword of the Sea is available on:
- Nintendo Switch 2
- Xbox Series X|S
- PlayStation 5
- PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store
The Nintendo Switch 2 edition supports handheld, tabletop, and TV play.
A Different Kind of Adventure
Not every game needs an enormous skill tree, a hundred-hour campaign, or a map covered in icons.
Sometimes, the appeal is simply discovering a beautiful world and enjoying the journey.
With its distinctive Hoversword movement, striking environments, and focus on restoring life to a forgotten landscape, Sword of the Sea offers something refreshingly different.
And now, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox players can experience it for themselves.
Are you picking up Sword of the Sea for the exploration, the visuals, or because surfing across sand dunes sounds ridiculously cool?
