A new job, an Evangelion crossover, and another reason to completely abandon our backlog. Square Enix clearly woke up and chose chaos.
During Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo, Square Enix dropped a mountain of news about Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, the MMORPG’s upcoming expansion.
We’re talking a brand-new ranged DPS job, an official release date, additional raid content, and fresh details about the Evangelion crossover.
And if you’re a Warrior of Light who thought you might finally get a little downtime, we have some unfortunate news.
Meet Zephyr, Final Fantasy XIV’s New Ranged DPS Job
The biggest reveal was Zephyr, the second new job coming to Evercold.
Zephyr is a physical ranged DPS job that combines crossbow attacks with assistance from an avian familiar named Nephele.
Yes, we’re getting crossbows and a bird companion.
Frankly, the bird already has our attention.
Square Enix unveiled a new trailer demonstrating the job in action, giving players an early look at its combat style.
The reveal adds another option to the game’s ever-expanding job roster, and we’re particularly curious to see how Nephele factors into moment-to-moment combat.
Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold Arrives February 23, 2027
Square Enix confirmed that Evercold launches February 23, 2027.
The expansion will introduce new areas within the Icebound Realm of the Fourth, additional story content, and changes to how players experience combat and rewards.
A new full-length trailer also debuted during the Tokyo keynote.
Preorders begin November 4, 2026, at 10 a.m. Pacific.

Players who preorder through participating retailers will be eligible for several bonuses, including:
- Tentative early access beginning February 19, 2027
- Halone’s Earring, offering an experience bonus under qualifying conditions
- Wind-Up Köttr minion
For collectors, Square Enix also revealed a special Collector’s Box featuring artwork by Yoshitaka Amano, a Reaper figure, and additional physical collectibles.
Evangelion Is Entering the Chat
As if a new expansion and job weren’t enough, Square Enix also shared a new trailer for the upcoming Evangelion: Ghosts of Desire Alliance raid crossover.
Because apparently, the emotional damage of Evangelion wasn’t enough the first time around.
The collaboration brings the iconic anime franchise into the world of Final Fantasy XIV, with additional high-difficulty eight-player battles featuring reworked encounters inspired by bosses from the crossover raid.
For anime fans, this might be one of the most interesting parts of the announcement.
The combination of Final Fantasy XIV’s encounter design and Evangelion’s unmistakable identity has plenty of potential.
We’re just hoping the emotional support budget is included with the expansion.
New Raids, Fierce Difficulty, and Combat Changes
The Fan Festival keynote also introduced several other features planned for Evercold.
A new raid series titled Beyond the Lifestream will feature a crossover with the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, accompanied by newly revealed artwork from Tetsuya Nomura.
Square Enix also announced Fierce, a new raid difficulty positioned between Normal and Savage.
That could offer players a fresh challenge without immediately throwing them into the deep end of the most demanding encounters.
Other announcements included an evolved combat mode intended to emphasize each job’s unique identity and a new reward system called Seasons, designed to give players more flexibility in how they earn rewards.
Final Fantasy XIV Passes 35 Million Registered Accounts
Square Enix also announced that Final Fantasy XIV has surpassed 35 million registered accounts worldwide.
It’s another major milestone for the long-running MMORPG as it prepares for its next expansion.
With a new job, fresh locations, crossover raids, and changes to the game’s systems, Evercold is shaping up to be a substantial addition.
Warriors of Light, Your Free Time Has Been Canceled
Between Zephyr’s crossbow-and-bird combination, the Evangelion crossover, and new raid content, there’s a lot for players to look forward to.
And for anyone who has somehow managed to maintain a healthy relationship with their gaming backlog, congratulations. Square Enix has arrived to ruin that.
